Wireless DSL
Wireless DSL is the butter on the bread of the uber-connected world we’ve grown up in. While there used to be the old faithful enterprises like the USPS and Ma’ Bell, now it seems we don’t even need that home phone line for anything besides our DSL connection! We’ve got our cell; we’ve got our Blackberry, we’ve got our work computers, we’ve got computer terminals set up in and around our city; we’ve got wireless connections in public parks, hospitals, hotels, schools, and the DMV (and those are just a few of the many examples!) The point is that even though wireless DSL has invaded our lives in so many ways there seems to be even less reason to use it. But let’s have a look at the litany or providers and products. To begin with, for home units with multiple computers, you’ll need a wireless router. Laptop computers are much more mobile and able to pick up signals in multiple locations and with prices plummeting; there is really no reason for the bulky desktop unit much anymore, anyway. However there are a few companies that make the best wireless DSL routers. Linksys is one of these companies; Belkin is another that makes excellent wireless DSL routers. You can locate the Belkin or Linksys products with a simple search engine search or at any big box electronics retailer. You should first see what he deal is that’s running with your DSL provider as some, who are losing market share, may offer to include the router in the price. SBC is another wireless DSL provider who you can get service from in a bind. Depending on where your home is and who’s got the best service in your coverage area should be the deciding factor in your wireless DSL quest. DSL service is often very vocally rated by the chat rooms and in numerous circles. There are even whole websites dedicated to the policing of bad practices from companies. So if you’re the least bit concerned about your DSL ISP, have a look online. As I said, you can do it at work, public terminal, with your Blackberry, cell phone, other PDA, or even from your dial up signal (if that’s what you indeed have) And ask around! Your best resources are the one’s you already have! Friends, neighbors, co-workers, and family have a clever insight that you may never have thought of before. Besides, you don’t call you sister enough!
